The Boys Soccer Pyramid

Youth soccer in the United States is structured as a pyramid of competition. The base is wide — over 1.6 million recreational players in AYSO and city parks programs. Each level above narrows: regional travel leagues, then national competitive platforms, then national elite, then the pro pipeline. At the top, fewer than 8,000 players nationally hold a pro academy spot. Structure and level of play vary by region, age group, and platform — this map covers the boys/male landscape.

League Pathways

The pyramid ranks levels of competition — but inside each league family, there's a ladder. These diagrams show where a player can go within each ecosystem, from entry point to the top.

Boys League Landscape

All competitive leagues by level, with confirmed club and team counts where available. SoCal-specific leagues are noted. Data from data/leagues.csv, USL Youth direct contact, and SoCal Pitch.

Level is not exposure. A club sells two things — development and exposure to scouts — and they don't rise together. Leagues at the same level can differ enormously in who is actually watching: MLS NEXT (Homegrown Division) carries the most scout exposure in the system, ECNL claims 1,300+ scouts across its national events, while other leagues at comparable playing levels see scouts only at showcases, or not at all. Fees climb in tiers and exposure climbs in tiers, but they are not the same ladder — read the notes column with that in mind.

USYS itself continues — National Championships, Presidents Cup, ODP, and State Cups remain.

Financial Burden by League

Annual cost estimates by league and flight. Club fee is what a family pays the club directly. All-in adds equipment, tournament entry, and regional travel — the realistic family outlay before national showcases or private coaching.

What "club fee" doesn't include. Most clubs quote tuition only after tryouts and team placement — and that number excludes a long list of extras. A typical breakdown (from PSG Academy LA): league and tournament registration fees, field usage fees for games, referee and assignor fees, coach travel costs for tournaments and non-local games, uniforms, hotel accommodations, transportation, and meals. These line items are why the "All-In" columns to the right are materially higher than the club fee.

All-in estimates include equipment, tournament entry, and regional travel. National travel for U16–U19 players in showcase leagues (ECNL national events, MLS NEXT Fest) adds $3,000–$5,000/yr on top. Private coaching is the add-on clubs rarely disclose: elite club families in my survey averaged $4,500/yr above club fees, with $2,000–$6,000 typical — see The Cost of Play.
